|
Sunday 19 February and Monday 20 Feburary 2012: Over two days, Stream's 1st XI Cricket team played two matches against Francis Douglas Memorial College from New Plymouth. Two wins was an excellent result as FDMC have won for the last two years.
20/20 - Sunday 19 February Francis Douglas won the toss and elected to bat. Stream got of to a good start with Nicholas Mannix having opener S Sullivan caught behind for 0. FDMC then consolidated well with four partnerships of 30+ at a very good rate. Stream's bowlers restricted FDMC to 150-7 with 14 wides. Every bowler took a wicket with the best being Chris Rammell 3 for 32. Stream lost opener Alex Barrett early but then an excellent partnership of 78 between Oliver Flemmer (40 off 37 balls) and Glen Scotney put Stream into a good position. Glen then took control of the game and dominated the bowling to reach the target with 151-2 and an over to spare, Glen was 85 not out off 60 balls, with eight fours and two sixes.
50 Over - Monday 20 February Stream won the toss and asked FDMC to bat. Once again the Stream bowlers had trouble controlling the swing of the white ball, but once they got their line right FDMC were in trouble at 25 for 2 and then 42 for 3. A steady fall of wickets resulted in FDMC being all out for 96 in the 35th over. Stream opened with Kheinan Morrissey and Oliver Flemmer and they made a good start before Flemmer went for 23 with the score at 36. Kheinan continued on before he was caught behind for 30. Stream batted solidly, reaching 98 for 3 to win the game in the 26th over. Friday 24 February 2012: With the New Year underway, one of the first things that we do as a Catholic Community is gather to celebrate Eucharist. One of the main foci of this year is that of belonging and that is the theme that ran through our Mass. We gather together as one and acknowledge the presence of God in each other; and as we did we were welcomed with the song ‘Receive the Power’ asking the Spirit to guide us. We carry with us a book – the Bible - which gives us inspiration and the theme of belonging was highlighted in the readings. From there on it was a time to give thanks. Our Head Boy, Aaron Conlon gave a very inspiring reflection on what it means to say ‘Sectare Fidem’, but, more importantly, what it means to do ‘Sectare Fidem’. It was so heartening to see how so many seniors stepped up and played an integral part of the organisation and celebration of our first mass. May we all feel that we belong not only to SPC but to the wider Christian community as well. Father John Greally

Stream Wins Cricket Traditional with Town |
|
29-31 January 2012: Silverstream retained the Old Boys' Cup for 1st X1 cricket, by beating St Patrick’s College Wellington in the first traditional fixture of the 2012 season. The three-day game was played at Kilbirnie Park commencing on Sunday 29 January. Silverstream lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Silverstream started well reaching and were going nicely at 140 for 3 before the loss of Mitchell Scott (49) saw a batting collapse to see Silverstream all out for 184 in the 43rd over. All top six batsmen reached double figures. Alex Barrett (27) and Garreth Hitchman (26) also made handy contributions.Â
Silverstream’s bowlers then reduced Town to 5 for 56 at the close of play on the first day. Town were dismissed for 139 off 53 overs, giving Silverstream a lead of 45 on the first innings. A feature of the bowling was the accuracy of the Silverstream attack, making it very difficult for the Town batsmen to score, forcing them into errors. Matt Kelly picked up 3 for 27, Nick Mannix 2 for 41 and Zac Ringrose 2 for 24. Glenn Scotney also created problems for the batsmen with his pace and bounce.Â
Silverstream were very quickly in trouble in their second innings, being 5 for 45 in the 19th over, Luke Ireland of Town claiming a hat trick. An outstanding partnership of 97 between Ollie Flemmer (93) and Rohan Russo (46) steadied the innings. Ollie showed great maturity and skill in a very difficult situation having opened the batting and seeing five wickets fall at the other end. Kheinan Morrissey then took the game completely away from Town with a superb match-winning century; scoring 114 not out off 120 balls, including 21 boundaries. Kheinan was ably assisted by the tail, especially, skipper Chris Rammell and Zac Ringrose. Zac and Kheinan put on an unbeaten 81 run partnership for the 10th wicket. Silverstream declared overnight at 317 for 9, setting Town 363 to win.
On the final day, Nick Mannix bowled two spells downwind to finish with well deserved figures of 5 for 53, a reward for 20 overs of sustained pace and accuracy. Zac Ringrose and Matt Kelly bowled well into a very strong wind, with Zac picking up two wickets. Off-spinner Zac Brodie flighted the ball well and also claimed two wickets.Â
The result was a comprehensive victory to a Silverstream team containing eight players who were playing in their first traditional fixture.
