Stream Wins Cricket Traditional with Town |
|
29-31 January 2012: Silverstream retained the Old Boys' Cup for 1st X1 cricket, by beating St Patrick’s College Wellington in the first traditional fixture of the 2012 season. The three-day game was played at Kilbirnie Park commencing on Sunday 29 January. Silverstream lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Silverstream started well reaching and were going nicely at 140 for 3 before the loss of Mitchell Scott (49) saw a batting collapse to see Silverstream all out for 184 in the 43rd over. All top six batsmen reached double figures. Alex Barrett (27) and Garreth Hitchman (26) also made handy contributions.Â
Silverstream’s bowlers then reduced Town to 5 for 56 at the close of play on the first day. Town were dismissed for 139 off 53 overs, giving Silverstream a lead of 45 on the first innings. A feature of the bowling was the accuracy of the Silverstream attack, making it very difficult for the Town batsmen to score, forcing them into errors. Matt Kelly picked up 3 for 27, Nick Mannix 2 for 41 and Zac Ringrose 2 for 24. Glenn Scotney also created problems for the batsmen with his pace and bounce.Â
Silverstream were very quickly in trouble in their second innings, being 5 for 45 in the 19th over, Luke Ireland of Town claiming a hat trick. An outstanding partnership of 97 between Ollie Flemmer (93) and Rohan Russo (46) steadied the innings. Ollie showed great maturity and skill in a very difficult situation having opened the batting and seeing five wickets fall at the other end. Kheinan Morrissey then took the game completely away from Town with a superb match-winning century; scoring 114 not out off 120 balls, including 21 boundaries. Kheinan was ably assisted by the tail, especially, skipper Chris Rammell and Zac Ringrose. Zac and Kheinan put on an unbeaten 81 run partnership for the 10th wicket. Silverstream declared overnight at 317 for 9, setting Town 363 to win.
On the final day, Nick Mannix bowled two spells downwind to finish with well deserved figures of 5 for 53, a reward for 20 overs of sustained pace and accuracy. Zac Ringrose and Matt Kelly bowled well into a very strong wind, with Zac picking up two wickets. Off-spinner Zac Brodie flighted the ball well and also claimed two wickets.Â
The result was a comprehensive victory to a Silverstream team containing eight players who were playing in their first traditional fixture.

Gold for Stream's Fletcher Greaves at National Secondary Athletics |
Sunday 11 December 2011: In a stand-out performance, Fletcher Greaves (pictured left) won gold in the junior 400m in 50.84 seconds in the National Secondary School Athletics held at Newtown Park, Wellington. Setting a Silverstream record for Under-15, Fletcher was totally dominant, winning with enough time to raise his hands in the air and cruise across the line. The throwers and jumpers were nearly all juniors with Nathan Moen (pictured right), a Year 10 student, taking a great 3rd in the junior javelin with 45.8m - he still has another year in this grade. Year 10 student Lui Luamanu was 8th in shot with 13.10m, where he is seeking to break brother Matt's best throw of 15.20m Dominic Roe was 4th in the junior 3000m with a personal best of 9min 48 secs. The junior 4 x 100m relay team was 5th and both senior relay teams qualified for the final, illustrating Stream's depth at this level; a dropped baton frustrated the A team and the B team finished 7th. The 4 x 400m senior relay team ran 3min 31 sec, just  3 seconds off the school record. Overall, a pretty good day at the track.

In a close fought match, Wellington College set a tough total of 110 all out, Hayden Day taking 3 for 13 off 6 overs. For parents on the sideline, it was a nail-biting finish as wickets fell. Silverstream eventually batted through to 111/9, with Matt Hine batting through the whole innings to finish with 27 runs and Zelius Venter contributing 25, to give Stream a one run victory. Year 9 and 10 Retreats 2011 |
|
22-25 November 2011: Quitters, Campers, Climbers - Over four days Year 9 and Year 10 students have had an opportunity to reflect on attitudes, choices, and looking forward with hope. They were given the opportunity to test their physical, mental and spiritual courage and see how they responded to the various activities that were prepared. Kaitoke Country Gardens provided the ideal location for this, where they were fed well and made to feel so much at home that they could take some time out as young men. Instead of the Act, Stop, Think way they sometimes use to make decisions, we were all encouraged to Stop, Think and then Act. Moments of inspiration were provided, and, in particular, through the main character of 127 Hours and how he had to really ‘dig deep’ in order to survive. Hopefully, this has been an opportunity for all who took part to really look at their lives and see the many opportunities that lie ahead. |

Stream Takes Neville Shield |
|
Tuesday 6 December 2011: Stream's victory in the Neville Shield (149.5 to 80.5) was the most decisive win for Stream in over 10 years. The Neville Shield is Stream's annual encounter with Town in junior athletics, and was tougher than ever in 2011. Rain, to later become a deluge, made many of the tracks events more like a cross-country event. Surprisingly,  some outstanding performances were recorded: Nathan Moen in the 600g javelin threw 46.00m to break his own Under-14 record; in the shot Lui Luamanu won with an impressive 14.10m with the 4kg shot; in the 200m Stream sprinters took the first three places in both year levels; Fletcher Greaves took three wins to lead the team from the front. Rain hit mid-winter southerly status during the 1500m where athletes from both schools elected to continue - testament to the best and worst qualities of being young men! Both schools have significant numbers of athletes competing at this weekend's NZ Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Wellington, and were glad to have the competition, in spite of the weather!.
