Wednesday 2 May 2012: St Patrick's College Silverstream was a hive of activity today as prospective students and their parents attended the school's open day. It really was "School in Action" as parents and their sons wandered through the school while classes carried on as normal. All three sessions (8.30 am, 11.15 am and 2.00 pm) were well-attended, with the largest group here at 8.30am! Year 9 (3rd Form) students from across the classes were their guides, ably answering the many questions that arose. Amongst those guides were boarding students who could share their own experiences of boarding this year. The Rector, Mr Gerard Tully, welcomed visitors to the school and outlined the school's key focus areas: Belonging; Values; Excellence; and Self-management. Head Boy Aaron Conlon, a boarder since Year 9, spoke of "not having missed these five years for anything in the world". There was much interest in boarding as an option with the Director of Boarding, Mr Nick Tait, fielding many enquiries. Videos are available on Youtube of the following presentations (click on the words to go there):
Wednesday 4 April 2012: A little rain could not dampen their enthusiasm as Year 9 and 10 students raced over the school's cross-country track. Set by Athletics Coach Mr Hugh Steel, the course hugged the boundaries of the school grounds, alongside the trees and past the stream. In Year 9, Trent Hunter set out early and held the lead right through to the end of the 3 km race, winning in a time of 11:15 minutes. In the Year 10 race, Ryan Scaife and Zelius Venter raced neck and neck throughout with Ryan eventually pulling ahead to win in 10:15 minutes. In the senior competition, held earlier in the day, Thomas Yates led out well to win in 9:58 with Daniel Larkin 7 seconds behind.
Sunday 18 March 2012: St Patrick's College Silverstream are the top school team after their win in the Wellington Dragon Boating Competition on Sunday. Looking to retain the trophy they won in 2011, the team had worked hard under Coach Chris Fox and Sweep Baz Taniwha, with the coaching and hard work reflected in their winning time of 1:11.24, the fastest time recorded on the Wellington course this year. The team now heads to Auckland for the Auckland Regional Competition where they will be competing against the best of Auckland as well as the current national champions, Shirley Boys' High (Christchurch). Much appreciated financial support has come from
early, but it was a busy St Patrick's day for students at Stream. The life of St Patrick was celebrated with a liturgy in the chapel, including a drama by senior students. For the rest of the day students participated in a eclectic range of events, either as participants or "encouraging" spectators. All this was part of an inter-house competition for the Seamus Trophy, being presented for the first time. The last event of the day is the Paddy's Mile in which Year 13 students, in all manner of garb, race around the school grounds to find the fastest "Paddy". After eight events involving senior and junior teams, Trinity were presented with the Seamus Trophy, followed by Marist, Chanel and Patrick. A fantastic day was had by all.
Saturday 25 February 2012: Stream's Dragon boating teams competed strongly in this weekend's Harbour Fun Day against a mixture of school and adult teams, setting the fastest time against all teams, three seconds clear of the next closest team, the Fletcher Sealions. Based at Frank Kitts Park this competition is a warm up for the Wellington Dragon Boat Festival in mid-March. In the longest event (roughly five kilometres) Stream won by 30 seconds against teams who were seasoned, adult paddlers. On the weekend of 18 March, Stream will look to retain the Festival Cup they won last year. On 25 March, they travel north for the Auckland Secondary Schools dragon boating event. Attending the Auckland event will be Shirley Boys' (Christchurch) who are the current national champions. Special mention goes to
Tuesday 6 March 2012 11:08 am: After a great start to the day and some outstanding performances, Stream eventually finished third (121) behind Wellington College (157) and runaway winners, St Patrick's Town (202). Early wins to Ryan Scaife in the in the Junior 3000m and Jack Shipp in the Open 200m were book-eneded by a comprehensive win for Stream in the Open 4x100 Relay that closed out the day. Oustanding performances were: Stream finishing 1-2 in the Under-15 grade Javelin with Nathan Moen throwing 51.29m, just short of the McEvedy record, followed closely by Kenneth Tuffin; Saio Salevao threw 48.75m in the Open Discus, 7m clear of his nearest rival. Wednesday 22 February 2012: The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday and as a school we were ably lead in our reflections. We were asked to consider if all the things that we think are important to us were taken what would our identity be. If we ceased to worry about status, hairstyle, girlfriend, car, sports what would our life be like. In other words we were asked to reflect on who we really are. Eight seniors then placed the ash on our foreheads with the words “Sectare Fidem – Hold Fast to Your Faith” – to remind us that this college motto is something active rather than passive. Symbolically, at the start of the liturgies, the crosses were passed over our heads, calling us to embrace the call to discipleship. At the end of the senior liturgy the crosses were taken to the Fergusson Drive fence and nailed as a reminder of our Lenten journey, each time we see them on Fergusson Drive.
